My First Halloween

I might have said this before, but Halloween has always been my favourite holiday of the year.. I love the whole dressing up and eerie, mystical, spookiness of it all. It's so fun! Back when Halloween was a non existing thing in Norway, we threw our own small Halloween parties at home with our friends. Though they didn't quite get it, or understand much. It was an american/english tradition, that very few had heard of, if any. Everything is different now, as most kids nowadays is growing up with it. Celebrating Halloween is finally, just as natural as celebrating Christmas! Times has definitely changed..

It all started many moons ago.. When I was a little girl, my dad got a job offer in Montreal, Canada. We ended up living there for a couple of years. I did my first two years at school, learned english, made new friends, and I also learned new customs and traditions. One of them was, good ol' spooky Halloween.. And a passion was born!

I went as Litttle Red Ridinghood, on my first Halloween ever. My mom dressed my sister up as a witch, in homemade costume and scary makeup. With a big, black, pointy witch hat, that she had worked on for days. I remember it having cob webs and a spider dangeling down from it. I thought my sister looked super awsome.. My mother has always been of the crafty type and very good at it too. But she might have done, a bit of a too good job this time. It ended in tears, when my sister saw her own reflection in the mirror. She got so scared, that mom had to scramble together a cute pussycat costume, in the very last minute. I will never forget that witch costume.. Such a cool costume, that was never used.

What happend to homemade costumes, anyway? I always liked to shop around for my costumes. Put them carfeully together. Something old and something new.. I think that makes the best costumes.

What do you prefer? Ready-to-wear costumes,
or homemade? Scary or cute?

Makeup For The Crow...

Further down you find the tutorial I used for the eye makeup to my Crow Woman costume.. I changed it up a bit and made a black doll/geisha mouth with red center, instead of just black lips. I think it worked well with the whole circus/freak show theme.. I also had planned to make cuts out on both sides of my mouth, blood dripping from the wounds like on the tutorial on the bottom.. But didn't get the time for it, the eyes took much longer than I thought it would.. Doesn't it allways? lol Allways think I have so much time, but end up stressing through makeup and costume at the end...

I used clown powder in my face to get an even white surface, worked really well! Much better than the white creams you get in the costume stores for Halloween.. I've even used the powder afterwards, when I dressed up for the birthday costume party a couple of weeks ago. I found it to be really versatile and can be used for several looks. Just add as much or little whiteness as you want;)

Some more photos of my costume as the Crow Woman for this years Halloween.. If you followed my blog pre Halloween, you know I struggled through no less than 4 yards of cock feather trim that was made into a small skirt and a stole, and also an endless peice of fabric for my tutu. With no sewing machine at hand.. I also made a small, feather trimmed, headband out of some that was left.. On top of this I made a crow inspired fascinator hat!

I'm not sure which evil pit this devious creature crawled out of..

Friday Night Fun

A few photos from last Fridays birthday costume party:) Been thinking about posting these photos for a week now, without finding the time.. Finally got around to it! The invitation said to go digging in your closet and come as an overdone version of yourself. I pulled out my old butler jacket, a black satin shirt with gold buttons, black sequined shorts and belt, fishnet stockings, golden stillettos, my feather hat from the 40's and topped it off with red doll lips and feather tipped lashes.. A tad bit overdone! The party was great, pople were awsome and we had such a good time:) Everyone looked really nice in their overdone outfits and the drinks were diabolically yummi!! What more to ask for? Think we stumbled into a taxi around 7 in the morning.. A real all nighter;)

Tutu Skirt From Hell

After hours of sewing I finally got my costume together late last night... I fought and won, the battle over the tutu skirt! Though there were times i questioned that I ever would.. I know it sounds dramatic, but that's how it felt. lol The slippery material sticking together at all the wrong places, the 3meters/118inches long layers sliding away from each other and doing everything to anoy me. Not very patient I must admit, that must have went out the door with my ex.. I solved the slippery, sticking together problem by laying two heavy books on each side of the material, with a smaller area in the middle that I could sew. Then I moved it along as I got further down.. Worked wonders! A lot of swearing and cursing later I had made my first tutu, and without a sewing machine:)

Added some photos from the making of the costume.. (Huge spoiler allert, close your eyes Miss Lindy Lee and other guests to our humble Halloween soiree)...

The Mad Hatteress...

I've been working on the design for a small hat fascinator to my costume for some days now, to give it that mad circus feel... I decided to give it a go late last night. As my man said, there's not really that much time left, I should really get started! Hahha I've just been focusing on this tutu skirt I'll be wearing, so many layers and i don't have a sewing machine.. Which means i need to do it all by hand. Yaiiiks!! Have to say it puts me off a bit:/ But I'll need it, so better get it done.. Today, or maybe tomorrow.... *Cough*

The hat project on the other hand was a joy to make!! I used a couple of hours on it and it really turned out great! I used a few different items I have laying around for my hats, fascinators and jewelery line, which will be started up soon. I'm really pleased with the design of it, and I think it will fit perfect with my costme this year..:) Can't wait!!

You see a few photos of my new hat fascinator below, what ya' think?
